I had a maintenance that was supposed to last from 12am on sunday to 6am that same day. Unfortunately, so many problems arose and the maintenance went on till 3pm. By the time I was done, I could barely keep my eyes open. I’ll explain in more detail later because it’s that lenghty.
A little tidbit, your primary AD server on vmware ESX could cause problems and cripple your system if something goes wrong.

I’m at VMware training this week for my VCP so I won’t have much time to check on the site this week. I’m barely able to keep up with work while in class.
A quick tip for you VCP candidates: “take ONLY the vmware approved courses, NOT the vmware bootcamps that are not approved by vmware”. VMware bootcamps not approved by vmware might be taught by VCP certified individuals and you might get a voucher for the test BUT without taking A VMware APPROVED course, you will NOT be able to take the exam. VMware account rerps might not tell you this so before you spend 3K-5K on a course make sure it’s approved by vmware.
I’ll put more info on the course I’m taking later this week.

Spacemonger is a tool that lets you see (GRAPHICALLY !! very important) what directories and files are using up alot of space. There’s the free 1.4 version or the cheap 2.x version. The 2.x version has some bells and whisles that are really good, so for a couple of computers you can shell out the money.

For you server admins, I know there’s a couple of tools out there for controling multiple RDP connections. My favorate though is Royal TS. I’ve used it for 2 months now and I’ve had no issues so far. Though I used to use the windows desktops app, there are alot of limitations that Royal TS addresses. Plus Royal TS is FREE.

This weekend I had to test a vm from a SAN snapshot. Easy uh. Turns out there’s a couple of extra configuration steps involved with Vmware that I needed to do.
To use both the original and snapshot in the same ESX server:
- In the SAN, make sure that the ESX server has read+write rights to the snapshot volume.
- In the VI Client, select the host in the inventory panel.
- Click the Configuration tab and click Advanced Settings.
- Select LVM in the left panel, then set the LVM.EnableResignature option to 1.
- Rescan the volume.
- After rescan, the LUN is displayed as /vmfs/volumes/snap-<DIGIT>-oldlabel.
Note: Any virtual machines on this new snapshot volume are not autodiscovered.
You have to manually register the virtual machines.
If the vmx file for any of the virtual machine or the vmsd file for virtual machine
snapshots contains /vmfs/volumes/<label or UUID>/ paths, these
have to be changed to reflect the resignatured volume path.”
